Prerequisites - Clean Driving method
Introduction
The Clean Driving method consists in driving in a efficient manner so as to reduce pollution, the risk of having an accident, money spent on maintenance and gas, save on time and benefit from increased comfort. There's nothing miraculous about it.
My basic advice can be put into practice very simply and won't take you more than 15 minutes or so at the very most.
Adjustments to your car
Quality tires
Your car should always be in tip-top condition and be equipped with quality tires, preferable the ecological ones from Michelin or any other tires of the same standard. Pump your tires up to the recommended maximum allowable limit; this will enable you to save up to 2 to 3% of gas.
Roof rack
Remove any roof racks that are not in use: such racks represent a pointless 7.5% of additional fuel consumption. Don't store heavy items in your car.
Tune your engine well
Tune your engine correctly using a CO detector at a mechanic's. The lower the level of CO, the less your car emits this lethal gas (the same gas that kills several hundreds of people each year due to a faulty boiler) and the better the fuel combustion, and therefore the less gas you consume. In this way, my gas consumption was reduced by 25% in one of my cars whose engine was not properly tuned.
In short
In a single visit to your mechanic's, your car will consume up to 20 or even 25% less than another that is of the same size but has not been optimized.
