Calculate how much your car really costs you

Calculate how much your car really costs you

Most of people in USA like in several countries such in France estimate that their car costs them $200 per month (or $2400 per year) on average! And yet, all things considered, a car actually costs more like $7000 per year, or $560 per month. And much, much more for an SUV.

Indeed, a car is not just about fuel costs but also the cost of investment at the time of purchase, insurance costs, etc.

Here you will find an Excel spreadsheet that will enable you to calculate the cost of a car journey. You only need to fill in the cells in yellow, which will contain the data necessary for the calculation. Never modify the contents of the orange or unshaded cells. Last of all, the cell shaded in blue indicates the estimated cost of the journey that you are planning.

The Excel spreadsheet was created so as to calculate costs that are as close as possible to reality; it includes the calculation of the amortization cost of the vehicle, possibility of including insurance costs in the cost of a journey, cost of repairs, fines, use of biofuels, and co2 compensation.

Feel free to contact me if you have any ideas on improving my calculation spreadsheet.

N.B: For those who are less patient, you will find a second link to another spreadsheet for a quick estimation of the cost of your car. The calculation here is only approximate but could give you a good idea of the true cost of your vehicle.
