Drinking water

Bottled still water is pointless in many cases, except when tap water is non-potable, as in many regions of Brittany (France) owing the nitrates present. Except for occasions when you want to drink sparkling water, which is pretty hard to make on your own, choose tap water over spring water. When going to your workplace or elsewhere, the simplest thing to do would be to buy a 50 cl bottle of water that can be filled with tap water. If you don't like the taste of tap water, you could purify it if you want.

If we take an example of a family of 4 that consumes 1 liter of spring water per day and per person over 47 weeks in a year (after all, we do go on holiday from time to time), this amounts to 1316 liters of water a year (i.e. 877 1.5 liter bottles), that is:

-$1,316 spent, assuming a price of $1.00/liter of water. In practice, bottled water is often even more expensive than this.
-31 kg of waste plastic if we assume an average bottle mass of 35 grams.

Une goutte d'eau

With a water purifier (cost from 20 dollars, see Brita), you will be getting water of very high quality at a very low cost, on the order of $0.03 to $0.07/liter.

This way, you will be saving more at least $1,220 a year (difference between $1,00 bottle of spring water and $0,07 purified water)!!! And you will be saving the planet, i.e. the equivalent of 3 600 km of pollution every year (pollution from the manufacture of plastics, from transporting the bottles of water by truck, from going to the supermarket to buy packs of bottled water, etc.).
